Summer holiday

If you are in the process of planning your summer holiday, and are looking for not only rest and relaxation, but also fun and adventure in the open air, then you have found the right place.

Use the 6 lifts that operate in the summer in the region to whisk you up and down the mountains for free, helping you with longer hikes around the Hochkönig.

Mountaineers of any age love it here, and find the right challenge for their level, whether it be a leisurely walk, a summit tour, via ferrata, or indoor bouldering.

Mountain bikers can look forward to single trails, speedy descents on downhill routes, and guided “electric” mountain bike tours in this wonderful region around the Hochkönig mountain.

There are so many attractions for the whole family, such as the summer toboggan run, the family mountain, Natrun, with its slide park and high ropes course, and the free outdoor leisure pool.

Other activities

Those who appreciate plenty of variety will find themselves well catered for in the Hochkönig region. Not only are there the special deals offered by the summer lifts, the varied selection of hiking and mountaineering tours, and the ever-expanding mountain biking network, but also the following attractions:

The Sommerstein outdoor leisure pool in Maria Alm has everything you could wish for, with a water slide, wild water channel, children’s pool and playground. It also has a restaurant with sun terrace, offering light snacks, refreshments, and plenty of ice cream. What’s more, entry is free with your Hochkönig Card!

If you prefer a natural bathing lake to chlorinated water, then just 5 km away is the Ritzensee lake, or a little further the glistening water of the Zell Lake, offering a refreshing dip in drinking quality water. Both of these places make a lovely bike ride.

The Natrun high ropes course is a particularly recommended high-up outdoor adventure. Highlights of the course that runs between the treetops are surely the 120 m speed flying Fox, the King Swing, and the 14 m freefall.

Guaranteed fun! From spring 2016 there are 5 slides up to 45 m in length on which to slide down from the mountain into the valley. The slide park of course has a path running alongside so that you can use the slides again and again, or avoid using them!

Next to the bottom station of the Dorfj@t lift is an “18-hole” minigolf course with holes of varying difficulty. Balls and clubs are available from the lift ticket office.

The “Walderlebnisweg” discovery trail starts at the top lift station of Natrun and takes you to the Jufen mountain restaurant, which has a deer enclosure, an adventure playground, and a 3-D archery course that is best visited with one of the qualified Trainers.

Tennis fans enjoy the Sommerstein tennis courts a few hundred metres from the village centre. There are 4 sand tennis courts, which you can use totally free of charge with your Hochkönig card. After that, dive into the outdoor pool to cool off, right next door to the Courts.

The Urslautal Golf Course is about 5 min drive away, with an 18-hole course (par 71) with a fabulous mountain backdrop, a driving range with pitch and putt green, and a 3 hole mini course.

A family paradise that is hard to beat! The Kahrbachalm lift takes you up to Toni's Almspielplatz (Alpine playground), with a water and sand playground, climbing towers, slack lines, and much more besides; sure to be a successful visit.

The Livingroom Hochkönig in Mühlbach is the perfect place to discover how good you are at keeping your balance. This slack line park requires sensitivity and patience. There are easy lines with supports to help you balance, jump lines, and long lines, and a unique uphill line. Comfy bean bags are there for you to a breather, and the neighbouring Sennerei Schweizerhütte serves food and drink if you are in need of some refreshment.

If your children need a little variety on their walks, then a secret formula of success is “geo-caching”. Pick up a treasure map and GPS unit from the local tourist information office, and embark on a treasure hunt with a difference with the children. There are 35 clues to be solved to crack the “Highking Code”, and you get your own personal geocoin as a reward.

A trip with a mountaincart is always a guaranteed family hit. Take the Karbachalmbahn lift up to the start of a 6.5 km route that takes you 700 vertical metres back into the valley. Enjoy the views as you drive down.

Still not enough?

The range of activities on offer in the Hochkönig region is wide and diverse. You can find a summary of other activities put together by the tourist office here:
